Emergency Comfort Kits

Emergency Comfort Kits

In the event of a severe earthquake or snowstorm, our children may have to stay at school for a considerable length of time. We would like to be prepared in order to make our children as comfortable as possible. Therefore, parents are being asked to assemble a "comfort kit" containing items necessary for basic survival needs in four general categories:
    - warmth
    - nourishment
    - personal hygiene
    - emotional support

Following is a suggested list of items which should be included. Please collect these items and send them to school at your earliest convenience in a GALLON-sized zip-locking bag. Children can help gather the items. The bags will be stored in the classrooms and returned home at year-end. Please clearly label each item with your child's name.

    - Letter of comfort (sample below) - Family photo
    - Stocking cap, socks, small gloves - Small flashlight or glow-stick
    - Small tissue pack
    - Health plan (if medically insured)
    - Small toy/deck of cards
    - Large garbage bag (folded up)
    - 3-4 small non-perishable foods (check expiration dates):
beef jerky, fruit leather/rollups, sealed fruit cups (include small spoon), raisins, cheese/crackers, canned meat (flip-top), granola bar (nut free!), 3-4 hard candies (jolly ranchers, lifesavers)

We understand that providing these kits might place a financial burden on some families. Please do the best you can. The hand-written comfort letter and picture of the family are especially important for each family to send. The PTA will help as needed. If you are able to donate additional comfort kits, all donations would be greatly appreciated.

Please remember that foods in the comfort kits may not contain peanuts or tree nuts. The foods must be in original packaging so that ingredient lists are available to be verified. Please remember to choose small, individually-packaged items that fit in a gallon-sized zip-locked bag.

(to be hand-written or printed for your child to read)

Hi (Child's name),

If you are reading this letter, something has happened that means you will be staying at school longer than usual. I know you might be a little scared, but we're sure you are safe at school with your teachers and classmates. Your mom and dad are fine and will be with you as soon as possible.

I hope you enjoy the snacks and other things in your comfort kit.

Dad and I (or whomever is appropriate) are thinking of you and I am sure we will be together again soon. In the meantime, enjoy your snacks and have a good time with your friends.

We love you very much,
Mom and Dad
