Annual Book Drive for Bailey Gatzert

Each year Whittier families donate new books to be shared with fellow Seattle elementary school, Bailey Gatzert Elementary.  The drive is sponsored by the PTA and the goal is to encourage student reading over the Spring Break.  Gatzert Students enjoy a cookie party in their classroom and take home two books to keep.

Bailey Gatzert Students love the same books that Whittier students do and each year we focus on collecting the following:
       - Graphic Novels
       - Easy Chapter Books
       - Early Readers
       - Non-fiction Books
       - Series Books, like Dairy of a Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants, Magic Tree House, "I Survived..."
       - Step Into Reading
       - Picture books
       - How to Draw Books
We ask that donated books be new or in good condition, without any marks, tears, or writing. They don't have to be hard-back — paperbacks are just fine. Popular titles are appreciated. (Please no outdated, holiday, or religious-themed books.)

2017 Bailey Gatzert Spring Book Drive

Thank you to our Whittier community who made our Spring Book Drive to benefit students at Bailey Gatzert Elementary, a huge success.  Our goal was to collect ~700 books and this year we have nearly doubled that quantity.  We collected many great titles from favorite authors like Mo Willems, Dav Pilkey, Raina Telgemeier and Rick Riordan.

Whittier is a community of readers and we are proud to share our enthusiasm for books with the students at Bailey Gatzert to inspire their reading over spring break.   We delivered 750 books to Bailey Gatzert Elementary where each classroom had a pre-break party and every student selected two books to keep.  Donated books were also given to the Bailey Gatzert Library to lower student library fines by replacing books that had been lost.  We are excited to use all our extra books to sponsor an additional book party for Gatzert students in late June to supply great reading material for the summer break.

Thank you for supporting and encouraging learning across our Seattle School community.
