Principal's Paw Print, April 2017

April, 2017

Greetings Wildcats!

We are back from spring break and working on preparations for next year!

We started off April with an amazing performance by all our Bboys and Bgirls and the fabulous Massive Monkeys. Judging by the crowd size, most of you saw it too! Speaking of performances, tickets will go on sale soon for our yearly Musical production. This year, The Whittier Wildcat Players are putting on Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. We can't wait! Bike Unit is in full effect and it has been so fun seeing all the bikers on the playground. And seeing all your rock stars in the halls (including the staff) last Friday was so cool!

"Rock Star" Spirit Day, April 2017: staff dressed up!

We want to know your plans of next year: We will be sending out a small questionnaire next week asking your plans for your student(s) and to see if you have any new students who will be joining us next year. Please fill it out to the best of your knowledge at this time and return it to the office as soon as you can!

Register new students NOW: If you or someone you know has a student that will be with us next year, please get them registered as soon as possible. The more accurate enrollment information we have, the better we can lan for next year.

Staff Updates: Kelsey Cohrt wil not be with us next year, as she plans to pursue new opportunities. Jessica Agberico will be leaving her Kindergarten position to be our Literacy Specialist. Her Kindergarten position is currently posted and we are holding interviews this week. I anticipate three more open positions that are currently held by teachers on maternity leaves. As our enrollment changes, I will be looking at class configurations and teacher assignments based on openings as they become available.

Spring Fling FUNraiser: Get your tickets to the Whittier PTA's Inaugural Spring Fling today! Enjoy an evening dancing to the beats of our very own DJ Ms. Steph, while gazing on appetizers and desserts! Catch up with old friends and make some new ones at the cash-only bar! Peruse and bid heavily on fabulous themed-buckets provided by each classroom and sign up for Whittier parent-hosted parties!

Intercom: We have a tentative date to implement our new intercom system on May 15th. The front and back doors will be locked from 8:15am to 1:45pm. The front office will "buzz" you in via the front door. there will be signs and reminders posted around the building prior to the new change happening.

Painting Projects: We have some exciting news about improvements to the building. SPS has contacted us about painting our entire building — it hasn't been painted in 20 years! We can expect to see painters from the district next week as they begin setup and will start in the hallways. As the weather gets nicer, the crew will move outside to paint. They will have a 16-foot trailer parked just outside the playground doors for storage of their supplies as a home base. Please be sure your kids know to stay away from all the aping supplies. Thanks!

Another project on the horizon is Deloitte's Impact Day on June 9th. It is their way of giving back to communities, and they often choose a school...we are the lucky recipients this year! They will be painting our playground, adding color to our US Map, as well as our 4 square counts. They will also be doing some work around school grounds, such as weeding and adding wood chips. This will be a big day — there may be over 100 volunteers to do this work! and recesses may look a bit different given the amount of work that will be happening on the playground. We will do our best to not let it interfere too much with the school day, but we appreciate you being willing to be flexible throughout this exciting day!

Jog-A-Thon: Our first of hopefully many more years of a Whittier Jog-A-Thon is scheduled for Friday June 2nd. It's going to be a really fun and interactive spirit day! Classes will run during their recess plus an additional 10 minutes of class time. Thank you to the PTA for coordinating this event. We are looking forward to seeing all the runners on the playground!

Student Safety Reminder: Remember that it is important to drive slowly while in a school zone. Please watch for children crossing the street and pay close attention to crossing guards and adults directing traffic. We are all responsible for keeping children safe. Please observe ALL bus loading zones, crosswalks, and posted signs. Also as a reminder, we don't have supervision on the playground until 7:35am each day.

Principal,
Melissa Schweitzer
