Fill Us In! Back to School Fair
A designated time (typically one afternoon/evening the week before school starts) where families can tackle new school year paperwork, receive teacher assignments and learn about PTA events and opportunities.
Whittier Wildcat Welcome
New families are invited to kick off the new school year with light refreshments and meet Principal Melissa Schweitzer. Kindergarten students are able to meet their teacher and visit their classroom. Older new students have an opportunity for Q&A and a school tour with Principal Schweitzer. Families can also complete required school and district paperwork. Please remember to bring your checkbook.
First Day Jitters
Tea, coffee & baked goods are served in the cafeteria on the first day of school to welcome new families to Whittier.
Welcome Back Potluck
Families celebrate the start of another year over shared food and summer storytelling on the playground. Friday evening the first or second week of school.
Family Movie Night
Watch a movie in the cafeteria on the big screen with your friends! Students select the movie by popular vote. Movie Night also occurs in the Winter and in the Spring.
School Supply Drive
Annual, one-week (first week of school) school supply drive to benefit our sister school, Bailey Gatzert.
The Whittier PTA publishes an annual directory of school and family contact information. To be included in the directory, fill out this online form.
Learn about your child’s curriculum for the upcoming school year. Typically held on a weekday evening in late-September or early October.
Whittier’s annual, renowned celebration of Fall featuring a haunted house, carnival games, food trucks and costumes as far as the eye can see.
Annual food drive benefiting Ballard Food Bank.
Annual Giving Campaign
Fall fundraising drive sponsored by the PTA.
Reflections PTA Art Contest
Annual cultural arts competition sponsored by the National PTA and WSPTA, providing students an opportunity to express themselves through original artwork. Typically held in November.
Private conferences between parents & teachers held once a year in November.
Seattle Kids Marathon
Students are encouraged to participate in the Seattle Kids marathon in late November. Miles can be earned during the before-school running club offered by our PE instructor, Mr. Pule.
Annual holiday gift drive providing gifts and SCRIP gift cards to Whittier and Bailey Gatzert Elementary families in need.
Whittier partners with a local bookstore to offer a large selection of books for sale. A portion of the proceeds benefits Whittier.
Whittier reserves an ice rink at Highland Ice Arena in Lynnwood during the Thanksgiving break. There is a small charge for ice skate rentals.
Staff Holiday Wish Lists
An opportunity to wish your favorite teachers and staff members happy holidays with a gift straight from their own wish list.
Beloved PE instructor Mr. Pule hosts an evening of fun at the end of Winter "Screen-Free" Week, offering a variety of activities in the gym. Families are encouraged to bring their favorite board games to share.

Families interested in attending Whittier during the upcoming school year are invited to an open house/school tour to learn about Whittier's programs and facilities. Typically offered during an evening in late February or early March.
The annual STEM Fair aims to promote a culture of scientific inquiry at Whittier. Typically held in the lunchroom and gym on the last Thursday evening in March.
Biennial fundraiser held in early April featuring an online auction, raffle, and culminating live and silent auction/gala.
Annual book drive to benefit the students at our sister school, Bailey Gatzert. Typically the end of March / beginning of April.
May is Bike-to-School Month and is designed as a fun event to encourage bicycle commuting and mentor new riders.
Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week
An opportunity for families and students to say thank you to staff for all they do. Typically the first week of May.
Fifth graders attend a 3-day residential outdoor science program led by experienced educators. Requires parent chaperones. For more information about NatureBridge, visit www.naturebridge.org.
Spring Movie Night & Art Festival
Watch a movie in the cafeteria on the big screen with your friends! Students select the movie by popular vote on ballots are sent home in April via KidMail. Movie Night is usually in early June.
Popsicle Play Date for New Families
Kindergarteners and new students for the upcoming school year enjoy popsicles, meet kindergarten teachers and learn about Whittier. This event is held on the playground during a weekday evening in late May.
Field Day is an afternoon of outdoor games, activities and popsicles for all students to celebrate the upcoming end to the school year. This event is organized by Mr. Pule but requires significant parent support.
Open to 3rd through 5th graders. Auditions are held after winter break, followed by rehearsals. Performances are held in the Spring.
Awards Assembly, Year-End Slide Show & 5th Grade Promotion
The annual Awards Assembly and 5th Grade Promotion celebrates student achievements and our 5th grade Wildcats as they prepare for the move to middle school. Features a slide show of photos from throughout the year. Held in the lunchroom / gym during the last week of school.
August Play Dates
An opportunity for incoming Kindergarten and new students to gather and socialize on the Whittier playground before the new school year gets under way. A current Whittier parent is on hand to answer questions.

Staff Appreciation Lunches
Parent volunteers provide a monthly staff lunch. Each grade hosts one lunch during the school year.
RULER Family Nights
New for the 2016-17 school year, Whittier will host several RULER-themed Family Nights to help families familiarize themselves with RULER, our social-emotional curriculum.
Parent-organized dates throughout the year that target landscaping projects around the school.
4th & 5th grade instrumental music and JazzCats jazz band perform throughout the year.
Students and families are encouraged to turn off their screens (e.g., TV, video games, computer, iPad, etc.) for one week during free-time hours and use other methods of entertainment. Held two to three times per year.
The Whittier PTA publishes an annual yearbook, a collection of school photos and memories captured throughout the year.
