    RULER Family Nights

Whittier plans to host several RULER Family Nights during the 2016-17 school year. RULER is the social-emotional approach to learning that we teach at Whittier, and we're eager to introduce families to the curriculum.

    RULER Family Night #3

The third and final RULER Family Night this year will be Thursday, April 6, 6:30pm - 8:00pm in the Whittier Library.

Parents are invited to join staff for an interactive workshop to learn about the Meta Moment, a RULER Anchor tool that helps us to deal more effectively with unpleasant feelings (e.g., anger, frustration, fear). Learn how to use the steps of the Meta Moment to be the parent you want to be — not the one who gets hijacked by stress, acts in haste, and regrets it later.

NOTE: This is a parents-only event.

    RULER Family Night #2 Recap

Whittier hosted its second RULER family night on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017.

At this parents-only workshop, parents learned about the Mood Meter, a RULER anchor tool that can help children and adults strengthen their emotional intelligence. Emotions impact attention, memory, learning, decision-making, relationships, health and well-being.

The goal is to learn to recognize your feelings and the feelings of those in your family, and together create a positive emotional climate at home and school.

To work on your skills at recognizing, understanding, and labeling emotions at home, download this Parent-Child Mood Meter Worksheet.

If you couldn't attend the event — or if you need a refresher — we made a recording of the event. (Special thanks to videographer Troy Morison!)

    RULER Family Night #1 Recap

Whittier hosted its first RULER family night on Thursday, Nov. 3, from 6:00pm-7:30pm; we talked about Charters.

Classrooms and Staff at Whittier all make Charters, the first of four RULER "pillars." Charters allow a class, or any group of people, to collaboratively define how they want to feel in their classrooms, what students can do to feel that way as a group, and what to do when problems arise.

In this Family Night, we taught families how to create a home charter. Principal Schweitzer led the training session, guiding each family in designing a Charter of their own.

To work on a family charter at home, you may want to download these "Family Charter" handouts (6-page PDF).
