The Whittier community is committed to ensuring educational justice by creating an engaging, supportive and culturally responsive environment for all students, families and staff. Through teaching and nurturing the whole child, our staff strives to cultivate compassionate, resilient and creative children.

This month our virtue is empathy: “Learning to stand in someone else’s shoes, to see through their eyes, that’s how peace begins. And it is up to you to make that happen. Empathy is a quality of character that can change the world.” Barack Obama.

Brene Brown emphasizes four key steps to showing empathy. You can model empathy at home with your own family.

    • Perspective Taking – Or Putting Yourself in Someone Else’s Shoes
    • Staying out of Judgment and Listening
    • Recognizing Emotion in Another Person
    • Communicating that you can recognize that emotion.
You can learn more about empathy from Brene Brown’s website.

Whittier Safety and Inclusion Committee and the Whittier PBIS team are asking that all students practice EMPATHY this month. We are creating an empathy chain to help link our community together with empathetic acts. Students are asked to create a link for the chain both at school and at home. Please take some time to talk to your child about empathy and assist them with their link. It would be so cool if we had atleast 446 links that connects every student together!

In 2020 - Let’s model kindness and empathy for our students which will make our community, city and world a better place.
