    Whittier offers a wide variety of opportunities each year to celebrate our Wildcat community of students, staff and families. Please email the PTA Volunteer Coordinators if you would like to volunteer for any of the following events.


    Fill Us In! Back to School Fair
    A designated time (typically one afternoon/evening the week before school starts) where families can tackle new school year paperwork, receive teacher assignments and learn about PTA events and opportunities.

    Whittier Wildcat Welcome
    New families are invited to kick off the new school year with light refreshments and meet Principal Stephanie Clark. Kindergarten students are able to meet their teacher and visit their classroom. Older new students have an opportunity for Q&A and a school tour with Principal Clark.

    First Day Jitters
    Tea, coffee & baked goods are served in the cafeteria on the first day of school to welcome new families to Whittier.

    Welcome Back Potluck
    Families celebrate the start of another year over shared food and summer storytelling on the playground. Friday evening the first or second week of school.

    Family Movie Night
    Watch a movie in the cafeteria on the big screen with your friends! Students select the movie by popular vote. Family Movie Night occurs in the Fall and Winter.

    Bailey Gatzert Support Drive
    Annual fall support  drive to benefit our sister school, Bailey Gatzert.

    Family Directory
    The Whittier PTA publishes an annual directory of school and family contact information.

    Curriculum Night
    Learn about your child’s curriculum for the upcoming school year. Typically held on a weekday evening in late-September or early October.

    Annual Giving Campaign
    Fall fundraising drive sponsored by the PTA.

    Picture Day
    Remind your student to wear their favorite shirt.

    Walk and Wheel Month
    In October, WildCats and their families are encouraged to get to school by foot, bike, roller skates, scooters, skateboards — let's get out of our cars!

    Fall Carnival
    Whittier’s annual, renowned celebration of Fall featuring an interactive stage experience, carnival games, food trucks and costumes as far as the eye can see.

    Food Drive
    Annual food drive benefiting Ballard Food Bank.

    PTA Reflections Arts Contest
    Annual cultural arts competition sponsored by the National PTA and Washington State PTA, providing students an opportunity to express themselves through original artwork. Typically held in October and November.

    Parent-Teacher Conferences
    Private conferences between parents & teachers held once a year in November.

    Seattle Kids Marathon
    Students are encouraged to participate in the Seattle Kids marathon in late November. Miles can be earned during the before-school running club offered by our PE instructor, Mr. Pule.


    Helping Hands
    Annual holiday gift drive providing gifts and gift cards to Whittier and Bailey Gatzert Elementary families in need.

    Book Fair
    Whittier partners with a local bookstore to offer a large selection of books for sale. A portion of the proceeds benefits Whittier.

    Ice Skating
    Whittier reserves an ice rink at Highland Ice Arena in Lynnwood during the Thanksgiving break. There is a small charge for ice skate rentals.

    Staff Holiday Wish Lists
    An opportunity to wish your favorite teachers and staff members happy holidays with a gift straight from their own wish list.

    Game Night
    Beloved visual arts instructor Mr. Buck hosts an evening of fun in December. Families are encouraged to bring their favorite board games to share.

    School Tour
    Families interested in attending Whittier during the upcoming school year are invited to an open house/school tour to learn about Whittier's programs and facilities. Typically offered during an evening in mid to late February.

    STEM Fair
    The annual STEM Fair aims to promote a culture of scientific inquiry at Whittier. Typically held in late March.

    Global Reading Challenge
    The Global Reading Challenge is a "Battle of the Books" program for 4th and 5th graders enrolled in Seattle Public Schools. The program encourages children to have fun and enjoy reading. 


    Spring Fling
    This brand new event will be an evening to remember for Wildcat grownups. Join us in early March for yummy food, craft beer, fancy drinks, funky jams, a mini-auction, and special Wildcat celebrity guests!

    Book Drive
    Annual book drive to benefit the students at our sister school, Bailey Gatzert. Typically the end of March / beginning of April.

    Bike-to-School Month
    May is Bike-to-School Month and is designed as a fun event to encourage bicycle commuting and mentor new riders.

    Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week
    An opportunity for families and students to say thank you to staff for all they do. Typically the first week of May.

    Fifth graders attend a 3-day residential outdoor science program led by experienced educators. Requires parent chaperones. Visit for more information.

    Spring Sing & Art Walk
    Celebrate Whittier’s love of art with a tour of student artwork in the lobby, and then settle in for a musical performance by 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. Typically held in June.

    Math Night
    K-2 Mathematicians and their families play math games in the cafeteria. You will get lots of ideas on how to build math games into your summer schedule. Learn more about our Math Night.

    Whittier Jog-A-Thon
    WildCats have an annual Jog-A-Thon in which all students are invited to run/walk during a 30-minute period of the school day to earn a great Whittier running-theme prizes and raise money for Whittier's PTA!

    Popsicle Play Date for New Families
    Kindergarteners and new students for the upcoming school year enjoy popsicles, meet kindergarten teachers and learn about Whittier. This event is held on the playground during a weekday evening in late May or early June.

    Field Day
    Field Day is an afternoon of outdoor games, activities and popsicles for all students to celebrate the upcoming end to the school year. This event is organized by Mr. Pule but requires significant parent support.

    Annual Musical: The Whittier WildCat Players
    Open to 4th and 5th graders. Auditions are held after winter break, followed by rehearsals. Performances are held in the Spring.

    Awards Assembly, Year-End Slide Show & 5th Grade Promotion
    The annual Awards Assembly and 5th Grade Promotion celebrates student achievements and our 5th grade Wildcats as they prepare for the move to middle school. Features a slide show of photos from throughout the year. Held in the lunchroom / gym during the last week of school.


    August Play Dates
    An opportunity for incoming Kindergarten and new students to gather and socialize on the Whittier playground before the new school year gets under way. A current Whittier parent is on hand to answer questions.

    Throughout the Year

    Staff Appreciation Breakfasts
    Parent volunteers provide monthly staff breakfast on the go. Each grade hosts one breakfast during the school year.

    Grounds Beautification
    Parent-organized dates throughout the year that target landscaping projects around the school.

    Music Concerts
    4th & 5th grade instrumental music and JazzCats jazz band perform throughout the year.

    Screen-Free Weeks
    Students and families are encouraged to turn off their screens (e.g., TV, video games, computer, iPad, etc.) for one week during free-time hours and use other methods of entertainment. Held two to three times per year.

    The Whittier PTA publishes an annual yearbook, a collection of school photos and memories captured throughout the year.
