    Global Reading ChallengeThe Global Reading Challenge is a "Battle of the Books" program typically held in January and February for 4th and 5th graders enrolled in Seattle Public Schools. The program encourages children to have fun and enjoy reading.

    2019 GRC Update

    FEB Eighty-Five of our fourth and fifth graders completed the Global Reading Challenge in the Library.  They did amazing!!!  Thank you Ms. Newcomb! 

    2019 Global Reading Challenge Books are announced!

    Led by Whittier's Librarian, teams of children who have read the GRC books take part in a "Quiz Bowl" game to determine the winner for the city of Seattle. The program encourages 4th and 5th grade students of all reading levels to develop teamwork while reading some of the best in children's literature.

    To participate in the challenge, you must fulfill the following requirements:

    • Be a 4th or 5th grade student
    • Read at least 4 books from the list
    • Attend once-a-week practice from 11:20-11:40 during the months of January and February. You will eat your lunch and practice answering questions. 
    • Commit to being on a team

    We have limited copies of these books in our library, so please look to the local libraries for checkout as well.

    2018 GRC Update

    The Whittier Banana Squids won the semi-finals of Seattle Public Library’s Global Reading Challenge last Friday, March 9th and will now move onto the finals. Out of hundreds of teams in the district, we are in the top 9! We are so proud of their hard work and determination.
